The brief was to distill the concept of a project in the design development stage, for submission to an architectural magazine competition. Located in a mountainous region, the cycling academy aims to form a web between various elevations. The section strings together various segments of the project to paint the journey from stadium to stadium.

The submitted product. The project is a cycling academy set in the mountains of the Izu peninsula in Japan. The design intent - to form a continuous ground that connects the academy at various levels, was emphasized through the contours of the site plan and the hills in the background of the long section.

The base drawing used for the image is a PDF of a topological survey. Each polyline was connected to its neighbour and resolved into curves in Rhino. The different elevations were then coloured in Adobe Illustrator. Blue was originally chosen to symbolise the history of the Izu peninsula as land that was originally underwater. Later, green was chosen instead to illustrate the forests of the present site.

The long section was challenging as it required the stitching together of 4 disconnected sections. A variety of styles were then explored. In order to tie into and emphasize the contours of the site plan, the hills in the background were terraced.

We peek into the dormitory on the 1st and 2nd floors. The 3rd floor is a hangar for bicycles with a central wooden storage for shoes, wheels and other cycling equipment. The roof, in all section segments. is a walkway for people to admire Mt Fuji in the distance.

The physiotherapy station occupies the 1st floor in this cropped view. A wide stair connects the 2nd & 3rd floor.

The ramp allows trainees to bring their bikes down from the 3rd floor hangar to the 1st floor where the road connects to the farther stadium. Otherwise they continue on the 3rd floor towards the closer stadium, and pass by the fitness testing room.

Trainees enter the changing room on the 3rd floor where they put on their racing gear. They then proceed to the stadium.

The largest track is connected to the academy via the 3rd floor. Here, trainees race while supporters cheer them on in the gallery.
