I was tasked to imagine how interior elements of an existing Tokyo building could be reused in the new development that would take its place. I identified 3 key areas in the existing building that had a remarkable interior mood, then studied the elements that created this mood. Afterwards, I selected 3 areas in the new building that would be suitable candidates to recreate this mood.

The interior design proposal for the Basement 1 shopping area and Metro concourse.

Newly generated tiles were to be located at the metro concourse, as this was a new addition to the schema of the basement. Existing tiles would be places at the shopping area. The existing ochre tiles were studied and proposed as the standard large floor tile throughout the basement.

The tilework of the existing building was a key asset that was identified as worth conserving. A study was done on the location of these tiles, their colour, configuration and philosophy of use. These tiles were found at every intersection of paths in the basement.

The new basement had more intersections that the existing one. Therefore, a new set of tiles were generated by swapped 2 pairs of colours. This creating a new set of unique tiles without compromising its visual language.

Existing walls of the basement were studied. The rough plaster textured walls and black granite skirting were proposed to be inherited in the new building.

The existing basement was found to have an alcove ceiling at the lift lobbies. This same alcove was proposed to be located at the lift lobbies and important intersections of the new basement.

The ceiling proposal for the office lobby included lighting fixtures that were found in the main entrance and lift lobby of the existing building. The existing building did not have an office lobby, instead a lift lobby that was grandly decorated with mosaic walls that swept into a mosaic ceiling.

The largest of the lighting fixtures of the existing building was proposed to be located in the large 3-storey high atrium.

The serialised square lighting fixture was found in the main ground level corridor and was proposed to be located in the office lobby. The original architect of the existing building had a fascination with squares and repeated them across scales in his design - the other example being the colorful basement tiles which were also square in module.
